My life as a woman, wife and mother.

Back from Michigan!

on August 12, 2012

Good afternoon! We left town early Thursday morning and came back Saturday night. Yeah, hindsight is 20/20 and we should have stayed an extra night in Houghton and come home today, but live and learn.

So, what did we do?

Thursday we left around 7:30am in the rain. Less than 45 minutes into the drive the windshield wipers started coming apart and flopping around, during the downpour! I found an underpass to pull over under and hubby fixed the wiper. Thank goodness he knows what he’s doing, since it would have taken me a long time to figure it out!

After that we headed up into Michigan. We stopped at the Porcupine Mountains and went to the Lake of the Clouds. It was a great view of a lake and some neighboring mountains where they have a huge ski jump.

We continued driving through the State Park to Silver City. We checked into our hotel and walked out on Lake Superior. To say it was windy is an understatement! It was like a hurricane out there!

We decided to head out for dinner to a town East of our hotel. I found it online prior to going up north but didn’t realize that they feed Black Bears and they appear right outside the dining window! It was quite a sight to see 1-3 black bears during dinner. The food wasn’t spectacular, but the waitress was nice.

On the way back to the hotel we visited Bonanza Falls. We were able to drive right up to the falls and then climb around on them. The girls had a blast!

Thursday night we went out on the shore of Lake Superior to watch the sunset. Our hotel is right on the beach and they had benches set out for everyone. It was very beautiful!

Friday morning we checked out of the hotel and headed towards Houghton and the Lift Bridge. It’s the only way to get into the Keweenaw Penninsula.

We stopped at a gas station and got some directions for a road we were looking for. We stopped at a State Park for lunch.

After that we proceeded to Agate Beach. We found a lot more rocks here and got out our new metal detector. All we found was bottle caps and tin foil, but it was still cool to use.

We got back on the road and saw two more waterfalls. Eagle River Falls and Jacob’s Falls. Both of these were right off the road we were driving on. Jacob’s Falls is right before we headed onto Brockway Mountain Roadway. It was the highest scenic roadway in the UP and pretty awesome.

The roadway took us into Copper Harbor. This was a small town, with a strip of shops that we drove through. We stopped at Swede’s Gift Shop, he was a jerk and we regretted buying anything from him. The upside was the Berry Shop, which was an ice cream store. Good ice cream and a quaint building. We also went to the harbor to look at the water and the lighthouse. The girls and Tom decided to walk up the creek and back into the park, I followed the trail! 🙂

After our time in Copper Harbor we headed back down to Houghton to check into our hotel. Let’s just say you get what you pay for! Cheap hotel, so-so room. The upside was breakfast was included and just as decent as our breakfast at the AmericInn.

Supper was at a Bar/Restaurant called the library. It was within walking distance from the hotel. We followed a paved pathway along the river. While the food was good, we had to wait almost 45 minutes for it! The girls were wilting since they were so hungry. That night they swam a bit in the pool and we got to bed before 11pm, like the night before.

Saturday morning we packed up again and headed to the Quincy Mine Tour. We made the first tour which started at 10am. We learned about copper mining and the history of this mine. We also got to take a tram ride to a tractor that pulled us into the 7th level of the mine. It was cold in there, like 43 degrees, but it was awesome to see the history of the mine.

We could have spent a lot more time there, but it was time to head down the road to Bond Falls.

This was easily the highlight of our trip. This waterfall was huge and had trails cut through the trees on each side of it. We got a lot of photos and the girls were in awe. After spending a bit of time there we headed to Rhinelander to our hotel. That’s where our plans changed. Rhinelander is only 3 hours from home and it was 3pm. We had NO plans for Rhinelander, it was just a stop on the way to break up our trip. Hubby suggested going home instead, so I read our reservation sheet and found out we could cancel until 6pm that day. So we drove up to the hotel and I canceled in person, we had to drive right by anyway, and C had to use the facilities! 🙂

So, now on to how I did exercise and food wise.

Thursday – I exercised at home prior to leaving. Food was pretty good even with eating out. We split two desserts between the 4 of us. Mine being Carrot Cake with a few bites of the Amaretto Mousse Chocolate Cake

Friday – I used the exercise room in the hotel. I did the elliptical, bike and treadmill for about 40 minutes total. Food was pretty good. I did eat a Reuben for dinner and some sweet potato fries.

Saturday – My exercise was a 20 minute run/walk/jog along the river path in front of the hotel. Food was not great at all! 😛

Where am I now? Today I am detoxing from the weekend. I’m not very hungry and I’m getting in my fruits and veggies for sure. I’m also drinking more water now that I’m near facilities!

I did not do formal exercise this morning, but I worked in the gardens a bit. My back is killing me! I hope it’s better by tomorrow because I plan on going to Zumba to get my groove on.
